The Dressing Room
Where the box tries on faces before it goes downstairs.
This is Jewelbox’s proving room. It is not a gallery of finished pages and it is not a moodboard. Every specimen here should answer a reusable question about the site’s typography, material roles, components, interactions, or room inheritance.
The current rule is simple: if an effect cannot eventually arise from ordinary Markdown, stable frontmatter, a semantic callout, or a reusable Quartz component, it has not yet become Jewelbox infrastructure.
For the reasoning beneath these roles, see The Grammar of the Box.
Reading Voice
To be kept is to be found is to become.
The center must remain calm enough to hold poems, diaries, therapy notes, essays, and long-form reading even while the periphery becomes peculiar. Ordinary prose should never need decorative markup to belong here.
Breath remains intimate. Weight remains dependable. ARCHIVE / PROVENANCE / MACHINE remains machinery.
Ordinary quotation / minor furniture
An ordinary Markdown blockquote is not a Threshold and should never inherit Mirror merely because it is inset prose. The canonical default now treats quotation as minor wooden furniture: a small dark inlay with a restrained brass pin-line, present enough to feel fabricated but subordinate to the page.
The object surrounding the text may become strange; the act of reading should remain possible.
This is not a ninth material role. It is a prose primitive whose expression can later change by room. A page can already test the quieter textile alternative by adding jb-quotes-ribbon to cssclasses; the Markdown remains an ordinary > blockquote.
Shell
Shell / protective body
The default Jewelbox shell is deep urushi lacquer: hard, polished, protective, and almost black, with sparse nashiji suspended in its depth and selective maki-e belonging to the perimeter rather than becoming wallpaper. Shell is the chassis of the box, not its normal reading field; most finished prose belongs to Lining or another room-specific receiving interior.
Lining
Lining / receiving interior
The canonical Jewelbox interior is red and receptive. The current default takes imperial crimson fabric as its principal material memory: fitted, woven, dense, and receiving rather than merely a flat red panel. Crimson velvet, brocade, and hidden floral remain sibling lining dialects, while future rooms may replace the substance entirely with ocean, forest, flesh, fog, photographs, animation, or another expression.
Structure
Structure / carcass / divider
Wood is the default language of what holds the box together beneath lining and ornament: drawer walls, supports, dividers, undersides, and hidden construction.
Fittings
Fittings / articulation
Fittings are the metal pieces mounted onto the box rather than a surface that replaces it: corner mounts, lock escutcheons, catches, hinges, rails, feet, plates, and filigree. Gold is primary; brass is its lesser, warmer functional relative. Their ornament may be sumptuous, but it should remain attached, sculptural, and purposeful rather than becoming a generic gold frame.
Threshold — Mirror
Mirror / threshold
The finished Mirror law is edge-bound rather than wallpaper-like: the backing fails at the perimeter, the center survives more quietly, reflection is imperfect, and only local surviving fragments catch light.
This is currently the first material expression considered substantially resolved. New experiments should preserve its physical logic unless they are deliberately testing a new threshold dialect.
Insert — Paper
19 AUG 2026
found again · handled · still legible
Paper is an inserted human trace rather than part of the native box body. The canonical slip is darker, fibrous, irregularly cut, and lightly singed at the perimeter; damage belongs to the edge, while the center deliberately protects ink contrast and legibility.
Jewel — Jade
Condensed significance
Jade is a rare local state. The stone itself is allowed to occupy the object as a visibly veined field; reading support should come from restrained text shadow and minute local smoke rather than a dark card laid over the stone. Ordinary navigation, links, scrollbars, and interface machinery are still forbidden from becoming jade by accident.
Material inheritance
An ordinary page needs no material markup at all. The canonical Jewelbox dialect supplies defaults automatically.
A room can later redefine a role without changing the role itself. For example, a poetry room may eventually interpret lining as ocean and its fittings as shell or bone. The stable backend key remains hardware for compatibility.
A particular page can deliberately mutate further:
jewelbox:
materials:
lining: forest
world: rain
threshold: pond-waterAnd a local object inside that page can still remain an insert:
> [!jb-insert] A letter
>
> Something found beneath the leaves.Things That Must Survive
These links are regression probes for the working systems around the material layer:
Check them as normal links, hover previews, and—where relevant—StackedPages. Material work must not casually break the existing DailyWritings, adaptive-section, privacy, or popover architecture.
Current boundary
The Dressing Room establishes the default jewelbox grammar. It is not a command that every future room look like a literal black-and-red jewelry box.
The scaffold comes first. Rooms may later translate, mutate, or violate it—especially poetry—provided the underlying roles remain intelligible enough that the system still knows what is world, shell, lining, structure, fittings, threshold, insert, and jewel.
